Behind The Scenes: How Our Realistic Model Railway Scenery Is Designed & Manufactured

At Noble Trackside Scenery, every model begins long before any machine starts printing or cutting. It all starts with observation, research, and an obsession with realism.

Whenever we come across photographs featuring detailed infrastructure, railside furniture, access walkways, cabinets, industrial structures, signalling equipment, or unique railway scenes, we catalogue them into our growing reference directory. These references become the foundation of future product development. During quieter periods between releases and production runs, we revisit these collections and begin the process of transforming real-world inspiration into highly detailed scale models.

Our goal has always been realism, but realism also has to work in the scales we produce.

When designing for manufacture, we constantly have to balance detail with practicality. While we would love to include every single washer, rivet, bolt, and fixing exactly as it appears on the real worl exivalent, there comes a point where the physical scale simply makes those details invisible to the naked eye. Even though we utilise extremely high-resolution 16K production equipment, not every microscopic detail will translate meaningfully into the final model.

Scale plays a major role in these decisions. O Gauge is far more forgiving and allows considerably more visible detail compared to N Gauge, where dimensions become incredibly small. Every design therefore requires careful judgement to determine which details genuinely enhance the finished model and which would simply complicate production without improving realism.

Once we have enough information and measurements gathered from our references, we begin recreating the item digitally using CAD software. Every dimension, support bracket, structure, and visible feature is carefully considered to ensure the final model both looks realistic and can also be manufactured reliably.

Every product design is then tested thoroughly. How does it handle during assembly if it is a sub-assembly style build? Is it straightforward for the customer to construct? Does the design package safely? Will it survive shipping? Can replacement parts be easily reproduced if ever required?

Shipping decisions

Ever wondered why many of our products arrive sub-assembled or in kit form?

The answer is surprisingly simple: shipping.

To retain affordability across our range, we have to work within the realities of the shipping industry. We primarily utilise Royal Mail services, and one of the biggest limitations comes from Large Letter classifications, which require packages to remain under 25mm thick. Many fully assembled models would immediately exceed this threshold, significantly increasing shipping costs and thus the cost to you.

By designing intelligent sub-assembly kits, we can keep products protected, maintain realistic detail, and most importantly, keep pricing affordable for our customers.

Once the design and assembly methods are finalised, we move into batch preparation. This involves creating production build files for our manufacturing equipment. Depending on the product, we may either manufacture an entire kit in a single production run where all components are produced together on one build plate or separate production into individual items across multiple build plates for maximum consistency and quality control.

After production, every item undergoes a thorough cleaning process to remove any excess manufacturing material. The parts are then dried and placed into a dehumidification stage to ensure absolutely no cleaning solution remains trapped within the model.

From there, the models move into our large UV curing oven. This curing system rotates continuously while exposing the parts to controlled UV light, ensuring the material is fully cured evenly across the entire model.

Finally comes the most important stage of all: inspection.

Before any product leaves us, every single item is individually checked. We inspect for damage, warping, missing details, surface imperfections, and print defects. If something does not meet our standards, we do not ship it.

Not because we think we can get away with it.

Because we refuse to.

If a product is not right, it is disposed of and reproduced properly. Our philosophy has always been simple, quality comes first, and perfection is the standard we aim for every single time.

That commitment is what allows us to continue producing highly detailed, realistic models for fellow railway modellers across multiple scales, while still keeping products practical, affordable, and enjoyable to build.

And of course, quite a few of our designs have actually come directly from yourselves, our customers.

We are always open to suggestions and requests, especially for those niche items that simply cannot be found anywhere anymore, discontinued infrastructure, or those highly specific details that complete a scene properly. Many of the products we now manufacture began simply as conversations with fellow modellers looking for something nobody else produced.

That direct feedback and interaction is a huge part of what allows us to continue expanding our range with realistic, useful, and unique products for the modelling community.
